Spending time on your employees’ development is an important way to grow your business. You don’t want your team to become stagnant, so encourage them to grow and develop with new skills. Here’s a list of some ways that you can help them out with that.

1.    Self-Directed Learning- Give you employees the opportunity to read articles, watch videos and lectures or find other ways to develop their skills on their own. If you are choosing this option, you should make a plan with them about how much and what kinds of things they should be looking for, and have them report back to you about what they have learned. This will ensure that the information stuck around, and you can see what kinds of things they have spent their time working on in order to better your team.

2.    Trainings- Pay for your employees to go to a training. There are lots of trainings available, so be sure you choose one that applies to your team and the skills that you are hoping to develop. Do a little research and find out what you can about the presenters in order to be sure that you are not wasting your employee’s time, or your money. Also, just because a training is expensive, that doesn’t automatically mean that it is good. There are also free local trainings available that might be as or more relevant to your team.

3.    Promotions- A great way to reward an employee for their hard work and development is to promote them. This gives them a sense of achievement, and also boosts their confidence level. Promotions are to be used sparingly, because once you reach the top, there is nowhere else to go. But they should be given when deserved.

4.    Coaching and Mentoring- Take some time to coach and mentor your employees, and have other employees do the same. If one of your employees is really good at making newsletters, have them work with another employee who might not be as skilled to teach them what they know. The mentor employee will feel good about the skills they are able to teach, and the learning employee will get an opportunity to learn a new skill. Win, win!

5.    Job aids- Don’t be afraid to post a few job aids around the office to help get stuff done. Checklists, visual diagrams and more can be very useful to help employees go through all the steps. Sometimes it can serve as a reminder to older employees who may have been on the job for a while, but are skipping steps along the way too. Everyone on your team can sometimes benefit from a reminder. Just make sure it isn’t pointed towards one particular employee. Make it an office-wide thing.
