Building relationships is an important part of having residents in your building. They need to trust you, and you need to trust them. Talking with them on a regular basis will help build your relationship. The more positive interactions you can have, the better it will go if you ever have to get serious. Here are three tips for building positive relationships with your residents.

Improvement

There is always room for improvement in any business. Always be asking yourself and your residents what you can be changing. A lot of times this refers to the service and maintenance of your buildings. Look for new things that you can improve and build upon, and ask your residents where else you can make improvements. Asking for input will show them that you are listening and willing to work with them, and will help build your relationships.

Innovation

Be a problem solver. If your residents are coming to you with a problem, be the one who devises a solution. Or work with your residents to come up with a solution. Think outside the box and make up a plan that satisfies everyone. If you are willing to work with your residents to get them what they need, they will be more willing to come back to you the next time they need something instead of getting sneaky and calling in outside help. Attend trainings and learn new things so that you’ll be ready to deal with whatever comes your way.

Integrity

Keep your integrity intact. Don’t try to make things up just to satisfy a resident in that moment. Don’t be afraid to tell someone that you have to look up an answer and you’ll get back to them. Not only does this show you are willing to do the work in finding the right answer, but it also gives you a great opportunity for follow-up. Come back to them with the right answer and they will be more likely to respect you for it.
